      <description>&lt;p&gt;I keep seeing tankless water heater quotes that look like they were generated by two different universes.&lt;/p&gt;&#xA;&lt;ul&gt;&#xA;&lt;li&gt;Contractor #1: “Yep, $4,200.”&lt;/li&gt;&#xA;&lt;li&gt;Contractor #2: “Yep, $9,800.”&lt;/li&gt;&#xA;&lt;/ul&gt;&#xA;&lt;p&gt;Same house. Same day. Same homeowner standing there blinking.&lt;/p&gt;&#xA;&lt;p&gt;It’s not &lt;em&gt;price gouging by default&lt;/em&gt; (sometimes it is, sure). It’s usually scope.&lt;/p&gt;&#xA;&lt;p&gt;Tankless isn’t just “a nicer water heater.” It’s often “a nicer water heater + whatever your house has been getting away with for the last 25 years.”&lt;/p&gt;</description>
